DVD / CD Package Makes it Easy to Experience
The Beauty, Grace and Charm of Belly Dance
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (SAT., JAN. 2, 2010) — Belly dance has gained popularity as a timeless expression of grace and feminine charm, as well as an aid to health and fitness. But the rhythms and movements can sometimes be intimidating even to those with dance experience.
Now a prominent Colorado belly dancer has produced a unique DVD/CD learning aid designed to make traditional Middle Eastern dance understandable and provide step-by-step instruction to help even beginning dancers experience the beauty and healthfulness of this ancient womanly art.
Created by Jaiya, one of the foremost dance professionals on the Rocky Mountain arts scene, “Rhythm in Motion” takes a practical approach to learning belly dance, examining traditional dance techniques and the music associated with it from a modern, Western point of view.
“Rhythm in Motion” provides a sequence of practical, easy-to-follow lessons that lead the viewer from a basic introduction to belly dance through warm-up and conditioning, body awareness, dance fundamentals, and developing choreography, all the way to a fully costumed performance. Particular attention is paid to the rhythms that often make Middle Eastern music feel strange, but which are essential to belly dance.

In analyzing Egyptian Saiidi-style music, Jaiya breaks down the rhythmical structure, showing how the internal patterns and emphases relate naturally to dance movements. A special feature of the package is a CD that includes nine original dance songs created exclusively for the presentation by Colorado composer Michael Kimbrell.
Drawing on her academic background in theater, plus dance experience from the age of 4 (including more than 10 years belly dance training), Jaiya is known for combining moves flavored by jazz, tap, ballet and ballroom with traditional ethnic patterns to create a dance style that’s fresh, energetic and personally distinctive. Her exhilarating performances have gained applause from audiences at such prominent Front Range Middle Eastern dance venues as Mataam Fez, The Caspian Café, and Tajine Alami.
In addition to her performing, Jaiya teaches belly dance, and is in demand as a demonstrator at arts symposia throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. “Rhythm in Motion” distills the educational insights gained through that practical experience. The package is useful on multiple levels, helping beginning dancers get started, even as it aids intermediate-level dancers in refining their skills. Also, while not designed primarily as an fitness aid, “Rhythm in Motion” can he used in exercise programs that include dance movement.
